There is a lot of wide open space out here

This is Lily on her converted police bike.

This is Lily's owner. A former law enforcement officer that should have been a tour guide.

Make sure you write this down. I can tell you where everything is. Then he proceeded to do that. I love it.

Funny how paths can cross and connections with strangers get made. I didn't even get their names.

My buddy said that he read that there are 4 people per square mile in Wyoming and 2 antelope per square mile.  That leaves a whole lot of room for solitude.  I had a change of heart and a change of plans today.  I cut the mileage in half so instead of leaving Casper and going to Idaho Falls, we only went as far as Dubois, WY (about 200 miles).  I had never heard of Dubois but I won’t soon forget it.  I spent an hour or so online last night looking for a place to stay in Dubois when I stumbled on a listing for The Longhorn Lodge and RV Park. It sits right on the Wind River. I read several reviews and they were all glowing so I took a chance.  What a surprise.  The place is great.  If you are out this way and want to stay at the “Gateway to the Tetons” try The Longhorn Lodge.

The bike riding was good for the most part.  It seems I missed the sign that said Welcome to Wyoming – ignoring no-passing lines is ok.  Three times today I had to slow way down and pull to the right to avoid problems caused by someone going the other way passing cars when they shouldn’t.  Along the way, we stopped at a rest stop – again in the middle of nowhere on US26.  There was a little dog running around like crazy chasing a tennis ball.  We found out here name is Lily and she rides on a motorcycle.  Her owners have a police version of the FL and Lily rides for hundreds of miles in her owners lap on the bike.  The owners are great people.  They live in Salem, OR and are on their way to a family reunion in Iowa.  He asked where we were headed and when I said Oregon, he proceeded to explain every possible route to Astoria.  It was great fun listening to his excitement.  His wife was along and so was his riding buddy of many years.  We talked to them for 45 minutes or so before they headed east and we went west.  I didn’t get their names, I only know Lily.  I hope they have safe travels.

We ate dinner in town (Dubois) and it was a “happening” place of about 10,000 people (and 5,000 antelope if we have are facts straight).  If we would have stayed another hour, we could have watched square dancing which has happened every Tuesday night for 40 years.

I spent a few minutes cleaning 3 state’s worth of bugs off the bike so I would have room for more.  We’re planning another “short” day tomorrow into Idaho Falls.  I suspect that the heat will get turned up – they have been having record high temps there.  We’ll decide where next once we get there.
