Yes there is plenty of corn in Iowa but there is some fun stuff to do also.   We left Galesburg, IL this morning and all of the weather forecasters were saying rain, rain, rain.  The sky looked bad but by heading due north to our first stop we stayed just to the east of the bad weather.  The temp never got over about 72 all day which makes for some uncomfortable passengers. Our first stop was to see the home of Mike, Frank, and Danielle – better know by their TV show – American Pickers.  (It looks bigger on TV.)  We kept an eye on the sky and moved on before the rain caught up to us.  We ran up highway 67 – part of The Great River Road.  The road was one step above a dirt road – it was bone jarring rough even on the big Harley. The road did skirt the river which was pretty cool. I couldn’t believe how close people build their homes to a river that seems to be constantly above flood levels.  We took a brief “Garmin” short-cut. I swear this thing will route you through somebody’s driveway if it is the shortest distance.  We came through Dubuque with rain all around. I passed up the chance to see the “gas station Jesus” that I found on roadsideamerica.com.  We made a run to Dyersville and pulled in at the movie set for the “Field of Dreams”.  It was fun.  I saw people taking pictures of the corn field.  I now have pictures of people taking pictures of corn – when those people are in their 70’s do you suppose they will remember why they took a picture of corn?  We checked the weather on or phones and changed up our plan.  Instead of heading back south through Anamosa (National Motorcycle Museum), we chose to stay on US 20 and head due west.  That was a good decision. The rain stayed just south of the highway and we didn’t have to put on the rubber suits. In one area, we saw trees down from some recent tornados – scary stuff.  We rolled into Ames at about 5:30 – earlier than planned due to the museum miss.  We’re about 650 miles in, sunburned, thankful that we missed the rain, and hoping for blue skies along with the promised 90 degrees for tomorrow.
