Pig Day

Earlier this year, I distributed some small, stuffed pigs to friends and coworkers. The instructions were to take the pigs with them then post the pics to my 2nd Facebook page – Henry’s Ramblings. I was happy with the responses i got even though i never could figure out how to let people post their own pics on the page. That leads up to my reason for revisiting Dove Creek, Colorado’s Dinner Bell Restaurant. The owner of the restaurant really helped with this crazy picture effort and I wanted to say thank you.

One thing you should know about breakfast at the Bell. Most restaurants call them breakfast bowls or skillets. At the Bell it is known as “Plate of Crap”.

We met Charlotte Daves, (owner of the restaurant) on an earlier trip. We became Facebook friends. I sent her one of the little pigs and after some pics, she gave it to some truck driving friends. The little pig went everywhere and pics were taken which was exactly the way it was supposed to work. It’s time to revisit Charlotte to say Thank You.

Unfortunately for us, Charlotte was traveling today. Maybe she heard I was on the way and took off. Her daughter was working and was kind enough to accept our pig trinkets with a promise to make sure Charlotte received them.

It was a short drive to The Canyons of the Ancients National Monument from Dove Creek. This area has more archeological artifacts of early Americans than any other site in the world. (I didn’t really count them – I’m taking their word for this.) It had some impressive examples of 1500 year old pottery, stone tools, and petroglyphs. Some very dedicated people have done superb work preserving these items.

We chose to avoid interstate highways as we made our way across central Colorado. That made for a very long day after we had over 500 miles behind us. The diesel ran great, even over Wolf Creek Pass at 10,850 feet. We drove the last 75 miles eastward on I-70 and pulled into the motel after 8:00PM. That’s a lot later than we usually arrive. I’ve mentioned before – once the front of my vehicle points toward Indiana, the pull is strong to get home. Hey – it’s only 1,100 miles or so to the ranch. Hmmmmmm.
