Route 66 westward

I’ve tried to follow Route 66 for years and never made it much farther west than Winslow, Arizona. This time I was determined to get beyond Winslow. We rolled all the way to Kingman, Arizona – a total of 242 miles from Holbrook, Arizona. I’ve read about Seligman, Oatman, and Kingman. Oatman will have to wait one more day. To be honest, I was disappointed in both Kingman and Seligman. If you are a rabid Route 66 fan, you really need to visit both of these trinket laden towns. We are not in the market for trinkets. We didn’t find much that was appealing.

One thing that was appealing was the changes made in Winslow at the Remembrance Memorial. They have added a permanent marker that states “We Kept Our Promise”. I took that to mean that we promise to “never forget”. This marker will ensure that we don’t. I found it very moving. It is located near the 2 steel I-beams that were part of the twin towers. This is the effort all of America should display in honoring our heroes. (Unfortunately, I have no way of reading the SD card from my other camera so the Kept Promise will have to be added later.)

Of course when you’re in Winslow, you are required to take pictures of Standin’ On the Corner Park”. Here are some of mine.

That last pic above is a replica of the next statue that will be added. Hair like a rock star (or a homeless guy).

One other thing I enjoyed in Winslow was the live musician they had playing on a corner near the park. Tommy Dukes is a good Mississippi blues man and I asked him to do “Sweet Home Chicago” – one of my favorites. There happened to be a couple guys from Chicago standing there and Tommy got on them because they didn’t request it first. He did a great job with the tune.

We covered the rest of today’s miles at as slow a pace as I-40 West would allow (that means between 75 and 80 MPH). Dinner was at a restaurant here in Kingman called The Dambar. It was less than memorable. I won’t bore you with the details other than to say it is located on Andy Devine Ave. If you don’t know who Andy Devine is, you should binge watch some old cowboy movies. (He was the “shaky sheriff” in the movie “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence” according to my resident cowboy movie expert.)

I forgot to mention something the other day when we were in Sulphur, Oklahoma. There is a certain kind of plant that used to be illegal but now is widely accepted around the country. We have passed a lot of dispensaries along the way. Rest assured that if you are incapable of getting yourself to a dispensary under roof, Oklahoma has the “Weed Wagon”. It’s kind of like Meals on Wheels but with an entirely different purpose. I was so amazed that I couldn’t get my camera ready fast enough to get a pic.

Tomorrow we plan to track down another YouTube Favorite – Wonderhussy. Stay tuned.
