The U-turn Happened Today

Every motorcycle trip reaches a point where the front wheel gets pointed back to the direction it came from. We traveled west. We stayed in the west. Today was the day we officially made the U-turn and headed back toward home. The eastward trek started from our rental house in Spearfish. I included a couple of pictures of the house as we were packing the bikes up to leave. I did that so I can remember it months from now. It served our needs while we were here.

The route home is a retracing of the route we used to get here. There may not be daily blogs because we’ve already covered this ground but I will see what I can do.

It was another hot day across South Dakota. It was almost 90 when we left this morning and 104 by 2:00 when we arrived at Fort Pierre (it might have been 3:00. Time zones here change depending on which side of the street you stand on.) We were exhausted and somewhat dehydrated. It’s hard to drink water when you’re traveling at 65 MPH on two wheels with a pretty good cross wind. We just had to endure the miles. I didn’t feel much enjoyment today. The tracker I use shows that we traveled 222 miles in this stifling heat

We did alter the route a little midway through when we were told road construction on US34 included 5 or 6 stretches where they demand you drive (or ride) off the pavement and out onto the dirt shoulder which becomes a bad mixture of loose gravel and uneven ground. We were heading East then North so we swapped it and headed North then East.

We started with breakfast in Spearfish at The Original Spearfish Breakfast House. I would rate this place 4.8 or even 4.9 out of 5. The food is great, the service is fast and friendly. If you find yourself in this area, this is where you should eat breakfast.

Dinner (222 miles later) was at the Cattleman’s Club Steakhouse. The place was absolutely packed and we were told the wait was almost an hour. Keep in mind that the outside temperature was still 95 degrees and there was no place inside to wait. Mike somehow managed to grab 4 seats at the bar. I think he used his starving, neglected biker face on them and they felt sorry enough that 4 people left. Way to go Mike. I don’t mind eating at the bar. The steak I had had was terrific, cooked just right and seasoned perfectly. I was going to take some pictures but my phone had shut down from the heat and hadn’t fully recovered. If you’re interested in Cattleman’s Club Steakhouse in Fort Pierre, South Dakota, you’ll have to search on the internet.

I was pretty full and glad that Mason remembered the way back to the hotel. My hope for tomorrow is that the weather forecast is accurate. The temperature is supposed to be 20 degrees cooler. That will make riding a lot more comfortable. Once again I have to say thanks to Max, Mike, and Mason for getting us 222 miles closer to home.
